Public Service Symposium on Suicide Prevention: Call for Participants
Guyana, November 8, 2017
The Caribbean Alliance of National Psychological Associations (CANPA), CANPA Member Association: the Guyana Psychological Association, and the University of Guyana, announce a Symposium on Suicide Prevention and Risk Reduction in Georgetown, Guyana, on November 8th, 2017. CANPA is seeking Caribbean psychologists with relevant expertise to participate in this one-day, capacity-building event.
Guyana has the highest rate of suicide per 100,000 population in the entire world. This is an unwelcome distinction for a country with relatively limited psychological professional capacity. Caribbean psychologists are invited to join us in Georgetown for this public symposium that focuses on psychology's readiness to lead a multi-faceted and multicultural response to this public health crisis. We are particularly seeking psychologists with expertise in the following areas:
- Multi-ecological mental health promotion – intrapersonal, interpersonal, communal, cultural, and societal
- Multi-ecological risk assessment and reduction interventions and strategies
- Robust services for attempters
- Suicide surveillance and registration capacity-building systems
Thank you for considering this opportunity to join us in this historic effort to strengthen local capacity and regional collaboration to promote the health and well-being of Caribbean peoples.
